In a recent letter to the Lancet, the leading UK medical journal, several prominent scientists have called for more research into new ways of testing the safety and efficacy of drugs. One of the signatories was Kirkstall’s CEO, Dr J Malcolm Wilkinson. New methods could also help reduce the dependence on animal testing which, in addition to the ethical arguments against it, has produced misleading results in many cases and could be leading to unnecessary attrition in the drug development pipeline.

GROWING DYNAMIC FLOW CELL CULTURE specialists Kirkstall Ltd has invested in the establishing its own laboratory and office suite as it expands its operations.

Kirkstall, which specialises in the production of interconnected cell culture systems for physiologically relevant in vitro toxicology screening, has opened new premises at the Sheffield Bioincubator.

The company was formed in 2006 by experienced technologist and entrepreneur Malcolm Wilkinson. The company conducted its first product development from a small lab and office at Sheffield’s Kroto Research Campus.

Initially based on intellectual property from the University of Pisa, Kirkstall has grown steadily from a research & development collaboration and now employs 10 people.

The new laboratory, which measures 680 sq ft, will provide the space and facilities the company needs to carry out further product development whilst offering contract research.

The new premises also include new 500 sq ft offices from which a recently expanded business development team is focussed on a major sales initiative.

Malcolm Wilkinson, Managing Director, said: “The new premises are fantastic and are in the perfect place. Kirkstall is surrounded by world-leading research in an easily accessible location which is important to us and our customers.”

“We started the business with research collaborations and have grown it sensibly by building a highly credible academic client base. We’re now focussed on expanding this with business from new academic and industrial research customers.”

“The secrets of our success are the expertise we offer and international user group we have built for our Quasi Vivo® product.”

Click for further information about Kirkstall Ltd and its Quasi Vivo® product.

Kirkstall has added 3 new researchers to its team as the company continues to grow its product development and contract research team. The new additions all join Kirkstall at its Sheffield laboratory. Following the appointments, Kirkstall has a research team of 7 staff.

As part of its expansion plans, the company has also broadened its business development team by hiring promising talent in the form of Shehnaz Ahmed. Sheffield Hallam University student Shehnaz beat twenty-four applicants to gain the position.

‘Their addition is part of Kirkstall’s ongoing commitment to providing cutting-edge cell culture and consumables with applications in safety and toxicity screening, stem cell research, and tissue engineering research to its world-leading client base,’ comments Managing Director Malcolm Wilkinson.

‘Expanding our business development team is the first phase in bringing our unique Quasi Vivo® product to the market place.’
